DO NOT MAKE ANY PAYMENT OR GIVE CARD OR BANK DETAILS IF CONTACTED ABOUT A LATE PAYMENT AND A THREAT OF BEING CUT OFF. BT WILL NOT CONTACT YOU IN THIS WAY. IF YOU’RE CONCERNED, HANG UP, WAIT 10 MINUTES FOR YOUR LINE TO CLEAR AND CONTACT BT OR YOUR BANK DIRECT.
We have received a warning from a lady living in the local area. This is what happened:
I have just received a phone call from a man claiming he is from BT and he knew my name and address, and asked if I received a letter from BT last week, that claimed my phone bill payment was late and the letter was warning me that if payment was not made, today is the cut off day!
I told him I had not received a letter and I didn’t know what he was talking about or who he was, he could be a con man for all I knew, and he said very calmly that he had been working for BT for the last 4 and a half years actually…..So I said I have not had a letter and (just to test him) asked him what was I supposed to do.
He said I could make a payment today or I would be cut off!
On that I said I would not be making a payment because I thought he was a con man and put the phone down.
Please pass this onto as many people as you can think of as the ‘con man’ was very convincing and is an expert at scaremongering. BT would not make threatening calls saying they will be cutting you off.
