Nether Stowey is a thriving, historic village in the Sedgemoor district of Somerset. The village sits at the foothills of the Quantock Hills (which are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) about 3 miles from the coast and 8 miles west of Bridgwater.
The village has excellent facilities, including two Pubs, a Post Office and shop, a general store, a butcher’s shop, hairdressers, a Library, a Primary School, two community facilities and a Health Centre. The Playing Field offers an increasing range of facilities, including a MUGA and a toddlers’ play area and a project to build a new village/community centre hopefully starting in 2023. There are numerous local organisations and activities.
Castle Street, Lime Street and St Mary Street, form the centre of the village and are part of a conservation area. At the centre of the village lies the Clock Tower on The Cross. A War Memorial, funded by public subscription, was dedicated in October 2012.
The remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey Castle can be found on Castle Hill at the top of Castle Street. St Mary’s Church stands upon a medieval site with its 15 century tower.
Nether Stowey is famous for its links with the Romantic poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth, Coleridge’s Cottage, now owned by the National Trust, is to be found at the top of Lime Street, opposite the Ancient Mariner pub. It is also the starting point for the Coleridge Way 36-mile walk to Porlock.
Nether Stowey is twinned with Theillay, a village in the Loir-et-Cher Department in Central France.
