Hinkley Point B Power Station Decommissioning Consultation
Public Consultation and Drop-in Events – 10 October to 21 November 2022
Hinkley Point B stopped generating electricity in August 2022 after 46 years of service. Over the next few years, EDF will be working closely with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Magnox to develop proposals for decommissioning. Decommissioning will involve dismantling and demolition of plant and buildings on the Hinkley Point B site.
EDF are holding a public consultation from 10 October to 21 November 2022, seeking your views to help inform the decommissioning proposals. These proposals will require the approval Office for Nuclear Regulation before decommissioning can proceed.
Public exhibitions providing information about the decommissioning proposals will be held as follows:

Proposed Combwich to Hinkley Point Shared Use Cycle Path
Public Consultation and Drop-in Events – 27th September (today) and 6th October 2022
Hinkley Point C has been considering a proposal for the development of a shared use cycle path running from Combwich to Hinkley Point. It would provide a sustainable commuting route for all Hinkley Point workers whilst also providing wider local value – offering an enjoyable route for leisure purposes. The route would further connect the existing cycle route along the C182 from Combwich towards Cannington and Bridgwater.
Before the application is submitted, we would like to invite you to join us at a public consultation event to discuss the proposal and provide your views. Two public consultation events are to be held in separate locations to cover the two key local communities on the proposed route.
- 27th September 2022, Otterhampton Village Hall, 1pm – 8pm.
- 6th October 2022, Stogursey Victory Hall, 3pm – 7pm.
As these are drop in events, please do come along at any point that is convenient to you within the event opening times.
Project Background
The proposed shared user cycle path covers approximately 9.3 km covering the following five sections (C-G): Environment Agency Bridleway to Stert Drove (Section C); Stert Drove (Section D); Stert Drove to Gorpit Lane Car Park (Section E); Gorpit Lane Carpark to the approach to Hinkley Point Complex (Section F); and Hinkley Point Northern Perimeter (Section G). The proposed path follows an existing rural highway and Public Rights of Way (PRoW). It starts just north of the village of Combwich and ends at the northern perimeter of the Hinkley Point complex.
The proposed path crosses agricultural and coastal land, covering a variety of existing rural land uses including a bridleway, a section of rural highway (Stert Drove), Common Land, the England Coast Path National Trail, and the northern perimeter of the Hinkley Point complex which includes a short section of woodland.

National Moment of Reflection
The public have been invited to take part in a National Moment of Reflection to mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflect on her life and legacy. The National Moment of Reflection will take place at 8pm on Sunday (18 September), the night before the State Funeral, and be marked by a one-minute silence.
A brief service will be held at The Cross at Nether Stowey, starting just before 8pm, led by Rev Eleanor King.

Public invited to help shape local democracy in Somerset, as consultation launched
A public consultation on the development of Local Community Networks (LCNs) has been launched.
People are encouraged to have their say on plans to develop LCNs across the county, to support decision-making at its most local level.
You’ll find the link to the consultation HERE.
Opinions are being sought on a range of aspects, from LCN roles and responsibilities, boundary options, to choosing a suitable name.
The consultation is supported by the County Council and four district councils (Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West and Taunton, and South Somerset) who will be replaced by a single Somerset Council on 1st April 2023.
Councillor Val Keitch, Somerset County Council Lead Member for Local Government Reorganisation, said: “The new unitary Council will cover a large geographic area, so we are mindful we need a model for communities where local voices are heard, partners are brought together, and decisions are taken with the benefit of local knowledge and experience.
“LCNs will be Committees of the unitary Council, supported by dedicated officers and managers, with formal decision-making powers and influence. They will address local issues and priorities, support health and wellbeing activities, and improve outcomes for our residents.
“We want the public to help us shape them. That’s why we are encouraging people to take part in the consultation and have their say on how LCNs will operate, and where they think they should be located.”
Cllr Keitch added: “LCNs must have the potential to develop their role alongside the new Somerset Council in the years to come. And it’s important to stress, in this challenging economic environment, that they must be effective, sustainable and also affordable.”

Climbing frame/gym equipment – consultation ends midday 7 November
UPDATE: The consultation on the proposed climbing frame/fitness equipment intended for the Playing Field has, so far, not received enough support to get the grants we were hoping would fund it. The consultation ends at midday on Monday 7 November and the Parish Council will decide at the Parish Council meeting on 14 November whether to take this forward.
As many of you will be aware, there has recently been a number of incidents involving some of our younger residents which have is in part due to a lack of facilities and activities for them in the village.
In answer to this, the Parish Council is considering installing some outdoor gym equipment to offer something hopefully as exciting, but safer than what they were doing, as per the picture below (click on the picture to see it in full screen). The equipment is based on a design provided by some local children, but modified to meet safety requirements:
We recognise the importance of ensuring provision for all age groups and maximising our assets including our open spaces to allow people to enjoy outdoor exercise for free and although designed by and for younger teenagers, the outdoor gym could also be used by all residents to support and improve the health and wellbeing of everyone. Therefore the equipment will be installed in the playing field where it will be accessible to all.
We would seek to obtain grants and funding to pay for the purchase and installation, there is no intention to spend the precept funds on this project.

A big copy of the plan will also be on display in the office until lunchtime on Monday 7 November.
Your support for this project will determine if we can proceed. A final decision, as to whether there is sufficient support to apply for the necessary grants, will be made at the Parish Council meeting on 14 November.
