On Thursday 6 May, residents in Nether Stowey Parish will have their say at the Nether Stowey Neighbourhood Plan
referendum – more information here and on who represents them at the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner election. The Police and Crime Commissioner is the person who oversees your local police force and ensures they are prioritising what matters to you.
In order to vote in these elections, you must be on the electoral register. With the deadline to register to vote fast approaching, Sedgemoor District Council is urging people who have not registered at their current address to make sure they are registered in time. The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Monday, 19 April. It takes just five minutes to apply online at Register to vote.
Voters have a range of options for casting their ballot – in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote. For those who choose to vote in person, all polling stations will have Covid-safe measures in place, making them safe places to vote on 6 May. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on 20 April, and for a proxy vote the deadline is 5pm on 27 April.

Parish Council meetings are open for the public to attend but are not public meetings. In order to facilitate contributions by members of the public there is a public session prior to the main part of the formal meeting.
During the public session, members of the public are welcome to address the Council on any matter relating to the agenda or on any other matter that they would like the Parish Council to consider at a future date. It is helpful if you inform the Chairman or the Clerk beforehand of any matter you wish to raise, so that the Clerk can have to hand any necessary information.
At the end of the public participation session, the Chairman will resume the formal meeting under standing orders. Members of the public are asked to respect the fact that this is a meeting of the Council to conduct Council business. They are not permitted to enter into the debate of agenda items unless invited by the Chairman. In this case, he will temporarily adjourn the meeting to allow that person (only) to speak.
During virtual meetings, members of the public are asked to remain muted unless invited to speak.
The conduct of Parish Council meetings are governed by the Parish Council’s Standing Orders (adopted 14 October 2019) as updated by the Virtual Meetings Protocol (adopted 11 May 2020). These are available from the Clerk (by e-mail on request) or on the Council’s website by clicking the document name above.

Hinkley Point have announced a significant increase to their workforce level in the coming months. It is thought likely that many of these additional workers will choose to live in the local area including Nether Stowey. Although HPC cannot give a precise timetable for this increase, since much depends on the pandemic and safety constraints, it is expected that numbers will start to increase slowly later this year and reach a peak towards the end of 2022/early 2023.
The Parish Council has started discussions with representatives from Hinkley Point to find ways to reduce the impact this will have on the village – in particular as regards parking, but there are other issues of concern.
We ask any landowners who have space close to the village which they could offer as space to create car parking? Do you have a driveway or garage that you would be interested in rent? Please contact us at the office or by e-mail to clerk@netherstowey-pc.gov.uk if you do! We would also ask that if you are thinking of offering accommodation to HPC workers, that you consider the impact this will have on your neighbours if you are not able to offer off-road parking. Moving your own vehicle to a verge or other legal place, so that your lodger doesn’t get reported is not helpful as this does not reduce the overall number of cars parking on the roads.
HPC do run an effective control for fly-parking (HPC workers who do not live in the village) and if you a problem please contact me to report it in. They are helpful where workers have parked in dangerous or illegal places, but please remember they cannot take action where a vehicle that has valid tax, MOT and insurance is parked safely on the road.
Coronavirus-related staff shortages have led to missed recycling collections today Friday 12 February from some streets in: Cannington, Nether Stowey, Over Stowey and Spaxton in Sedgemoor.
For these Friday collections, crews will return tomorrow Saturday 13 February from 6am.
List of all affected roads below (if missed elsewhere, report as usual after 7pm on due day via My Waste Services at https://www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/).
Rubbish, garden waste, clinical and bulky waste collections are NOT affected.
For more recycling space, flatten and tear up card; rinse, quash and put tops back on plastic bottles; rinse and – if safe – crush cans. Stack boxes locked food bin on top.
If materials cannot be stored or would present a health or fire risk, all recyclesites are on their usual schedules for essential visits only, and can take all kerbside materials for recycling.
The only exception is food waste, which should be double bagged and put in your rubbish, or added to the energy-from-waste skip at any recycling site.
All recycle site details, including essential safety measures: https://www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/allatall/
Recycling checklist: https://www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/recycling-collections/
If you need extra recycling containers, order them via My Waste Services at: https://www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/
Please observe all coronavirus safety advice for kerbside collections, including washing/sanitising hands before and after handing waste containers, disinfecting handles, and maintaining social distance from waste staff.
